Boxing Olympic Qualifiers: Abhinash Jamwal and Nishant Dev progress
As a result of their victories on day three of the World Boxing Qualifiers for the Paris Olympics, Indian fighters Abhinash Jamwal (63.5kg) and Nishant Dev (71kg) moved one step closer to achieving their Olympic quota.
As a result of Jamwal’s outstanding performance in his first-round fight against Andriejus Lavrenovas of Lithuania, he was able to secure a unanimous 5-0 decision victory. Jamwal had replaced Olympian Shiva Thapa for the second round of qualifying to compete.
In the later part of the day, Dev, who had previously won the bronze medal at the world championship, also triumphed over Armando Bighafa of Guinea-Bissau with a score of 5-0.
On the first two days of competition in the Thai capital, Sachin Siwach (57 kilograms) and Abhimanyu Loura (80 kilograms) had achieved victories that were very different from one another. Additionally, Amit Panghal (51 kilograms), Sanjeet (92 kilograms), Narender (+92 kilograms), and Jaismine (57 kilograms) and Arundhati Choudhary (66 kilograms) were among the ten Indian competitors who were given a first-round bye.
On Monday, Ankushita Boro will begin her campaign in the 60 kilogram weight class against Namuun Monkhor of Mongolia. Meanwhile, Loura will compete against Kelyn Cassidy of Ireland in the round of 32 at the 80 kilogram weight class. To this point, India has been awarded three Olympic slots to compete in the 2022 Asian Games in Paris.
Dipa Karmakar scripts history, becomes first Indian gymnast to win gold in Asian Senior Championships
The women’s vault competition at the Asian Senior Championships was won by Dipa Karmakar, making her the first Indian to ever win a gold medal in the competition. Karmakar finished first in the competition. In the vault final, which took place on the penultimate day of contests in the capital city of Uzbekistan, the 30-year-old gymnast achieved an average score of 13.566. Dipa, who had previously claimed a bronze medal in the vault competition at the Rio Olympics in 2015, had previously ended in fourth place in the vault final at the 2016 Olympics.
In the competition, the North Korean athletes Kim Son Hyang (13.466) and Jo Kyong Byol (12.966) were awarded the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
During the 2015 Asian Championships, Ashish Kumar was able to secure a bronze medal in the individual floor exercise competition. In the vault competition, Pranati Nayak had also won a bronze medal in both the 2019 and 2022 editions of the competition. Despite the fact that Dipa returned to competition in the previous year after serving a 21-month suspension for a doping offense, he is no longer in the running for the 2017 Olympic Games in Paris.
Neeraj Chopra pulls out of Ostrava Golden Spike
The organizers of the Ostrava Golden Spike event have revealed that Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra would not be participating in the tournament on May 28, as was initially scheduled. This decision was made owing to an adductor injury that Chopra sustained while conducting training.
Chopra, on the other hand, has stated that he is not hurt, but he has decided to withdraw from the Ostrava competition because he did not want to take any chances during an Olympic year. Chopra shared on his various social media platforms that he was experiencing discomfort in his adductor and that he was concerned that more exertion of his body could have occurred, resulting in an injury.
Chopra has already taken part in a couple of events this year – the Doha Diamond League and the Federation Cup in Bhubaneswar. Chopra is scheduled to be in action next at the Paavo Nurmi Games on June 18, but that now will hinge on his recovery by then.
