Kiran Rao on her divorce from Aamir Khan: ‘Didn’t dread it, needed my space’

Recently, filmmaker Kiran Rao revealed some thoughts into her divorce from Aamir Khan. She stated that she understood the importance of personal space and the development of one’s own identity. Rao mentioned that Aamir’s understanding and support were helpful to her during the process while she was being questioned about her concerns over the procedure during an interview.

During her conversation with Brut, Kiran Rao responded to the inquiry inquired about her apprehension of divorce by stating, “I did not fear divorce.” On account of the fact that I took my sweet time about it, I did not have any concerns about it. As two humans, Aamir and I showed a great deal of strength. Not only do we have a strong connection to one another, but we also love and respect one another very sincerely. That is something that has not altered, which is why I was not concerned about it. “I was aware that I required my own space, and I desired to live self-sufficiently because I believed that it would be beneficial for my own development. Having said that, Aamir acknowledged it as well and expressed his support for it, which was a significant factor in her conclusion.

In response to a question on whether or not she believes that marriage as an institution requires a reevaluation, Kiran stated, “I have always felt that.” Before Aamir and I got married, we shared a home together for a period of one year. In all honesty, we did it more because our parents encouraged us to do it. And even at that time, we were aware that it is a wonderful institution if you are able to function both as people and as a couple within that institution.

Kiran said, “I believe that the manner in which you interpret marriage is significant because it was intended for a specific purpose, and this social sanction is something that is very important to a great number of people, including children.” You will find that marriage bestows upon you a multitude of wonderful benefits. Having a new family, new ties, and a sense of security and stability are all benefits that come with it.

She continued by saying, “The thing that we don’t talk about enough is how marriage has a tendency to stifle life, particularly for women.” It is my opinion that there is something in it that is open to dispute and discussion, and that is how you may possibly find a way to be more yourself within it. We were living in groups when we were apes, and this nuclear family structure is a source of strain. This pressure is typically placed on women since there is a great deal of duty placed on the woman to care for the home and to maintain the cohesiveness of the family. Indeed, it is required of women to maintain communication with their husband’s family as well as their husband’s in-laws. That is the topic that I believe needs to be discussed in order to be able to navigate.
